Education & Studies abroad

Katharina studied in Kiel 2003-2010 and graduated in Geography with the minor subjects Public Law and Psychology. At an early stage she laid her focus of interest on coastal processes and received a combined scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) to spent part of her education in the Master’s Program Management of Coasts and Seas at the Universidad Autónoma de Campeche and to do a practical training at the Centro de Información Geográfica (CIG) at the Universidad de Quintana Roo.

Diploma Thesis
Katharina composed her diploma thesis 2009-2010 at Brockmann Consult GmbH, Hamburg, in coastal remote sensing. She discussed the potential of a data fusion of Landsat-5 TM and MERIS images to support a high resolution monitoring of algae blooms in the Baltic Sea. Her thesis was associated to the European Framework Programme 7 (FP7) project AquaMar.

Working Experience
2010-2012 Katharina worked in the Department of Geoinformation Services at Brockmann Consult GmbH. She held the post as assistant coordinator of the project CoastColour, which was contracted by the European Space Agency, and contributed to the algorithm development. The project aimed at developing worldwide applicable algorithms for the derivation of water constituents in optically complex coastal waters using a neuronal network.

In 2012 Katharina worked at the Stockholm University for six month. She was seconded to Sweden as young researcher within the project WaterS which was funded by the EC Marie-Curie Action Industry-Academic-Partnership and Pathways (IAPP). During these six months Katharina was introduced to water sampling techniques and validated algorithms developed for the detection of water constituents in the Baltic Sea.

2013-2014 Katharina came back to sustainability issues working in the UN decade “Education for Sustainable Development” in the working group Physics education/History of science at the Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg.

2014-2016 Katharina was contracted in parallel at the University of Kiel in the Future Ocean Excellence Cluster in the working group Coastal Risks and Sea-Level Rise. She concentrated on stakeholder involvement in sustainable management processes of lagoons (FP7 Project ARCH) and on aspects of vulnerability of deltas considering climate change and sea level rise (FP7 project RISES-AM).

Since August 2016 Katharina is working at the Institute for Marketing and Service Research, Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Rostock. She is part of the Lead Partner Team in the project CATCH (Coastal Angling Tourism – a development chance for the South Baltic Region) funded by the EU Interreg South Baltic Programme [http://catch-southbaltic.eu/]

In parallel to her project work Katharina intends to compose her PhD investigating the thematic field of “Maritime Flair”.
